A modest proposal
As valley
residents enjoy the new amphitheater at the Jackson County
Expo Park, built at considerable public and private expense,
Richard Anderson, of Central Point, has his eye on a much more
modest development tucked away nearby.
Anderson is the moving force behind
the Disabilities Recreation Project, which has completed
projects at Emigrant and Howard Prairie lakes to help those
who want to fish but can’t without special access for seniors
and the handicapped.
Now the DRP is setting its sights on
the Expo ponds. Anderson envisions concrete pathways for easy
access, picnic tables, good restrooms, good fishing spots and
a concrete fly-casting pond.
The DRP relies on donations and
volunteer labor to complete projects at a fraction of the
normal commercial price.
Where some might see neglected ponds
surrounded by brambles, Anderson sees a jewel in the rough. We
can’t think of a better use of the ponds than as an attraction
for seniors, disabled people and anyone else who wants to wet
a line.
